In the early 70’s, Michael and Gwen Chvalevich purchased an 1885 stone school house in Wellman’s Corners. This stone schoolhouse was a gem, but it was completely empty, except for a few school desks and an oak library table. The Chvalevichs noticed an ad in the local paper for a local farmer’s auction, near Campbellford, and decided to attend in hopes of purchasing some much needed furniture. Michael and Gwen had a great time at the auction, meeting several local residents, bidding on items, and buying enough items to furnish the majority of the schoolhouse for under $100! Thus, the schoolhouse purchase and the ensuing auction sale was the start of a lifelong hobby of antique hunting and collecting.
Out of this antiquing interest came a need for knowledge. In order to acquire more information about their antiques, the Chvalevichs amassed an extensive reference library and subscribed to such magazines as the Ontario Showcase, The Upper Canadian, MADD, Century Home, and the Magazine Antiques. Currently, Michael and Gwen are members of the Historical Lighting Society of Canada (HLSC) and the Night Light Association (the Miniature Lamp Collectors Club). The Chvalevichs also have an extensive network of personal and professional contacts in the antiquing world.
Over time, the collecting habits became somewhat out of control, and Michael and Gwen decided to concentrate on smalls. SHADYSIDE INVESTMENTS was formed in order for the Chvalevichs to share their collection of pressed glass, oil lamps, including miniatures, and lamp parts, as well as their knowledge of antiques with others.
Currently, you will find SHADYSIDE INVESTMENTS exhibiting at the following shows: Cabin Fever, Kingston, in early February; the Elora Anitque Show in April, the Westport Antique Show in early June; the Merrickville Antique Show in August, and the Oakville Antique Show in November. Also, SHADYSIDE maintains a frequently changing display of their antiques in the St. Jacobs Antique Market, King Street (booth #14) sharing with Patty George Pressed Glass (Booth #39). All of the antiques that are offered for sale by SHADYSIDE INVESTMENTS are thoroughly researched and authenticated, with the pertinent information appearing on the sales tag.
